Freeborn County has a new auditor-treasurer, well sort of. The Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday to appoint Pat Martinson, who has worked for the Auditor-Treasurer’s Office since 1990 and began as the county’s auditor-treasurer in 2013, rather than have an election for the position. The county has considered switching to an appointed auditor-treasurer and recorder since last year instead of residents vying for office, in part as a way to cut costs, officials said. Auditor-Treasurer Pat Martinson and Recorder Kelly Callahan were elected in 2018 and had been set to serve through 2023.
