NORTHWOOD, Iowa – A Mason City man who fatally struck a rollerblader has been sentenced in the 2019 vehicular homicide case. Luke J. Beenken was found guilty in November 2020 in connection to the incident in which authorities say he was texting and driving when he ran over Rick Johnson, 58, who was skating in a lane of traffic on 390th Street in Worth County. A judge ordered the 44 year old to five years of probation and 100 hours of community service. He has also been ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution to Johnson’s family.
