Sentencing rescheduled for Albert Lea man convicted in attempted ‘suicide by cop’ shooting and standoff

The sentencing for the Albert Lea man convicted in an attempted ‘suicide by cop’ incident at Shady Oaks apartments in November 2020 has been rescheduled. Devin Matthew Weiland is accused of opening fire on Albert Lea police officers, and holding them at bay for more than eight hours, after calling them to his apartment for reports of shots fired. Detectives said Weiland fired more than 80 rounds from his apartment. His lawyer said he wanted police to shoot and kill him. Three people were injured in the incident, including Wieland, who had been slated for sentencing Monday in Freeborn County District Court. His new sentencing date is Feb. 22.
